ECHA Prepares A Restriction Proposal For Chromium (VI) Substances
At the request of REACH, ECHA is initiating studies to prepare a restriction proposal on certain Chromium (VI) substances that take place in the Authorisation List of SVHC.
There are intense applications by companies to use these materials whose common use is electroplating and this creates a workload for ECHA and the Commission. So much so that evaluating all these applications will exceed the relevant resources, ECHA states. These difficulties must be addressed to avoid the negative effects of such a situation. This is the basis for the restriction proposal made by REACH.
On October 11th, 2023, ECHA was authorized to prepare an ANNEX XV report for the possible restriction of chromium (VI) substances included in Entries 16 and 17 of the REACH Authorisation List. In case a regrettable substitution risk for other chromium (VI) substances is identified, it is also possible for ECHA to request the Commission to cover additional chromium (VI) substances. This restriction proposal is expected to be submitted by ECHA by October 4th, 2024. After the restriction is approved by the Commission, the substances within the scope will be removed from the Authorisation List.
For the companies affected by this practice, which will be implemented by REACH for the first time, to better understand the situation, the Commission has published a Q&A document. Those who want to get detailed information can review the related article and the relevant documents on ECHA's website.
