REACH Regulation Revision Removed From 2024 Work Program

The Revision which was originally planned to be adopted at the end of 2022 was subject to another delay. It was postponed to the fourth quarter of the following year.

On October 17th, the work program to be implemented was accepted. This program sets out proposals to be submitted by the EU executive in the few months before the European Parliament elections that will take place in June. And after the elections, a new Commission team will be formed. With the view that revision is not likely in such a period, it was thought that the REACH amendment may have to be taken forward in the next mandate.

This postponement decision created uncertainty for many segments of society. It has caused disappointment for stakeholders and non-governmental organizations who strongly support the revision, while a spokesperson from the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) stated that they hope the revision will prevent the banning of chemicals that may be used safely and may have some benefits. VCI had previously called for a halt to the REACH revision several times. A CEFIC spokesperson also stated that they hope for a revision that ensures knowing which substances will be subject to regulation when and that does not cause delays in the necessary investments.

Although companies and investors who wish to know how chemicals to be used will be evaluated under regulations as soon as possible, as well as politicians and non-governmental organizations may not be very satisfied with this situation, it seems that there will be no revision proposal in the current period and only preparatory work will be carried out.
