Benzene-containing Substances Dominate the Export and Import of Hazardous Chemicals
About Benzene-Containing Substances
In 2023, 532 companies from 23 European Union countries reported data to the EU regarding the export of PIC chemicals, while 207 companies provided data on the import of these chemicals into the EU.
The annual report under the PIC Regulation (Prior Informed Consent Regulation) shows that trade in benzene-containing substances continued to dominate in 2023.
Based on the data submitted to ECHA, the following findings were obtained:
- The import of other hazardous chemicals into the European Union decreased by 56% in 2023.
- Benzene accounted for 98% of the total export transactions (65,147,553 tons) and approximately 99% of the total import transactions (65,739,206 tons) in 2023.
- While the reported export volumes of other PIC chemicals increased by 8% in 2023 compared to 2022, import volumes decreased by 56%.
- The remaining six most imported and exported chemicals in 2023 were similar to those in 2022.
- Cyprus, Estonia, Luxembourg, Malta, and the United Kingdom declared they did not export any PIC chemicals.
- Bulgaria, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta, and the United Kingdom declared they did not import any PIC chemicals.
Article 10 of the PIC Regulation requires importers and exporters to provide information on the annual trade of chemicals listed in Annex 1 of the Regulation to their designated national authorities by March 31 of the following year.
Each EU country must transmit the collected information to ECHA, enabling it to be summarized at the EU level and making non-confidential information publicly accessible.
